Keriton Off To A Fast Start In 2019
In January and February, two additional hospital systems in the Philadelphia area partnered with Keriton to train and go-live using our breast milk, donor milk, and formula feeding management platform.
We have trained over 225 new staff on the Keriton Kare platform in the last two months. For each go-live, our team observed and configured workflows for nurse milk prep at bedside and milk tech prep in dedicated rooms, respectively. Our implementation team worked with each NICU to customize training materials and to run one- to two-hour training sessions per user role. The educational curriculum includes defined competencies for the clinical and technical teams that touch milk and formula at any point.
In total, 100 new NICU beds are live on the Keriton Kare platform. Safety is the primary driver of adoption. Nurses in each go-live pointed out all the opportunities for error that Keriton prevents and eliminates. EMR baby-to-bottle scans offer a false sense of security for clinicians and families. Because EMRs treat milk like medication, nurses and milk techs are burdened by the tens of thousands of mental validations each month to prevent errors during feed prep and administration. It is well established that feeding infants expired milk increases their risks of infection, and feeding infants milk with the wrong additives increases their risks of feed intolerance.
Keriton creates a secure line between clinicians and families of NICU patients, significantly improving communication and coordination of care. By replacing traditional milk management workflows, NICUs that use Keriton leverage each infant's family to reduce opportunities for error and increase nursing efficiency while improving the mother’s ability to express breast milk.
Mothers of NICU patients are guided on how to download and use the Kare Mom app soon after birth. Clinicians are already seeing an uptick in milk produced and brought into the units. In addition, the inventory, or “virtual bin”, for each patient on the platform helps clinicians optimize breast milk before turning to more expensive options like donor milk and formula.
Things have been exciting lately. We’re planning go-lives with hospital systems in 2019 and 2020.
